Laos offers visa on arrival and an e-Visa to nearly every nationality but does not have a dedicated retirement programme [1]. The system is simpler than neighbouring Vietnam or Thailand but also less developed: in-country extension is short (one additional 30-day block on a tourist visa) and most long-stayers route through a business or investor visa with a Lao sponsor [2].
Visa-free entry for IE, GB, US, DE, FR
Laos does not grant visa-free entry to any of the five passports in scope. The Lao exemption list is limited to ASEAN neighbours plus a small number of states (Switzerland, Luxembourg, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia and a few others) [3]. Irish, British, US, German and French passport holders must obtain a Tourist visa, either online before travel or on arrival.
Tourist visa, e-Visa and visa on arrival
Two equivalent routes give the same result: a 30-day single-entry Tourist visa.
The Lao e-Visa is the official online option at laoevisa.gov.la, run by the Department of Immigration [1]. The portal calculates fees by nationality; standard European and US fee is around 50 USD (about 47 EUR), including the e-Visa service charge [4]. The visa is single entry, valid for 30 days from first entry, and the e-Visa must be used within 60 days of issue.
The Visa on Arrival is available at Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport, the Friendship Bridges with Thailand at Vientiane and Savannakhet, and a handful of other land crossings [2]. Standard VOA fee for Irish, UK, German and French passports is around 35 USD; the US fee is 35 USD; carry cash USD; Thai baht is accepted at unfavourable rates [2]. Land border officials sometimes add a 1-2 USD "stamp fee". The same 30-day single-entry stamp results.
From 1 September 2025, the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) at all major entry points became mandatory; arrival and departure cards are filed online before crossing [2].
Tourist visa extension
You can extend tourist visas (both VOA and e-Visa) once for 30 days at the Vientiane Immigration Office for 2 USD per day (about 60 USD or 56 EUR for the full 30 days) [5]. Not all provincial offices offer extensions; Vientiane is the only reliable location in practice. Officers occasionally grant a second extension in person, at their discretion. Maximum continuous tourist stay is therefore 60 days; longer stay requires a different visa class [5].
Long-stay options relevant to 60+ relocators
Laos has no published retirement visa, no digital nomad visa and no investor-deposit programme equivalent to MM2H. Realistic long-stay routes are limited.
Business visa (NB-B or B2) and Investor visa
Foreigners investing in or working for a registered Lao company can obtain a Business visa, valid 3 to 12 months single or multiple entry, with a Lao sponsor (a registered Lao company or a relevant ministry) [2]. The investor visa specifically is tied to capital contribution under the Investment Promotion Law, and after one year of investment activity the holder may apply for a one-year Stay Permit through the Department of Immigration [2].
Family visa (NB-T2)
A foreigner married to a Lao citizen, or with a Lao parent or child, can apply for a family visa sponsored by the Lao family member. Initial validity is typically one year, renewable [2].
Long-term residence
Laos does, in principle, allow Permanent Residence under the 2014 Law on Lao Nationality and subsequent immigration regulations, but in practice it is granted only after several consecutive years on a Stay Permit and is rare for ordinary retirees. There is no published fast track.
E-visa portal
The Department of Immigration operates the single official portal at laoevisa.gov.la [1]. It issues only the Tourist visa; Lao embassies abroad or the Department of Immigration issue all other visa classes (Business, Investor, Family, Diplomatic, Official) in country with a domestic sponsor [2]. The Department of Immigration's own site (immigration.gov.la) is the canonical source for visa class descriptions but content in English is limited [2].
Processing times
Lao e-Visa: 3 working days standard from successful payment [1]. VOA: issued at the immigration counter in 15 to 30 minutes. Tourist extension at the Vientiane immigration office: same day for most extensions [5]. Business, Investor and Family visas: 2 to 4 weeks at a Lao embassy, plus a separate registration step inside Laos.
Overstay penalties
Overstay costs 10 USD per day (about 9 EUR), paid in cash USD at the airport or land-border immigration counter on departure [5]. There is no published statutory cap. Prolonged overstays can result in detention and deportation at the foreigner's expense, plus a 1- to 3-year re-entry ban. Pay in US dollars where possible; Lao kip and Thai baht are sometimes accepted at unfavourable rates [5].
Limitations of public information
Lao immigration publishes far less English-language guidance than neighbouring Thailand or Vietnam. Always confirm fees and rules with the Lao embassy in the country of departure or with a registered immigration adviser in Vientiane before travelling for any long-stay purpose [2].
