Key cost drivers

Housing: a 1-bed in HCMC ranges 8 million VND (D2, older building) to 25 million VND (D1, serviced apartment). Serviced apartments are the most expensive option but include utilities, cleaning, and gym.

Food: local food is among the cheapest in SE Asia. A bowl of street noodle soup or rice noodles is 30,000-60,000 VND. A Western restaurant meal is 200,000-500,000 VND. Imported groceries (olive oil, pasta, cereal) are expensive, roughly 2-3x European prices.

Transport: most expats in HCMC and Hanoi use GrabBike (10,000-30,000 VND per trip) or own a motorbike. Owning a motorbike: 200,000-500,000 VND/month (petrol + parking). Cars are expensive to buy and fuel is comparable to Europe.

Alcohol: local beer (Bia Saigon, Hanoi Beer, Tiger) is 10,000-20,000 VND at a shop, 15,000-30,000 VND in a bar. Imported wine is heavily taxed: 300,000-800,000 VND per bottle.

Healthcare: private hospital GP visit: 200,000-500,000 VND. International health insurance: 1.5-4 million VND/month for a 60+ year-old with reasonable coverage.

Regional variations

  • Da Nang: 15-20% cheaper than HCMC for housing. Eating out similar. More options for affordable fresh produce and coastal cafes.
  • Hoi An: similar to Da Nang.
  • Nha Trang: slightly cheaper than HCMC due to lower tourist prices.
  • Hai Phong / Can Tho: 25-35% cheaper than major cities but fewer expat amenities.

Comparison with Western Europe
